【会員からの投稿】Special Issue Call for Papers, “Japan’s Diplomacy: Between the West and the East,” The Hague Journal of Diplomacy

The Hague Journal of Diplomacy calls for paper proposal submission. Accepted papers will be included in the journal’s special issue on Japanese diplomacy under the broad theme of “Japan between the West and the East.”

Throughout its modern history, Japan has occupied an important place in the changing global power dynamics, as the country itself has gone through major economic, political and social transformation. Its importance has once again heightened during the first decades of the 21st century with the rise of its neighbor China and its challenges for the Western dominated liberal international order.

This special issue welcomes applications from different disciplines. It focuses on Japan’s diplomacy in theory and practice and in the perspective of multiple security, economic and cultural challenges where Japan has straddled between the East and the West and functioned or failed to function – as an interlocutor of regional and Western powers.

We invite those interested in contributing a paper to this special issue to submit their proposals. Please send the paper title (50 words or less), its abstract (500 words or less) and the author’s bio (250 words or less) through this link by August 5, 2024.

We hope to accept about a dozen of these paper proposals as a part of the collection. Once the proposal is accepted, each author is expected to submit his/her/their full draft paper by February 15, 2025 in preparation for the paper workshop to be held at Leiden University in The Hague, the Netherlands, in March 2025 (funding permitting). Final versions of the papers are to be submitted to the journal in the summer of 2025 for full review and publication of the special issue in 2026.

During the paper preparation stage, the guest editors of this special issue can offer advice and hands-on guidance to those who seek support on writing academic articles in English. These editors are all speakers of Japanese who have experiences in serving on the advisory and editorial boards of several English-based academic journals including The Hague Journal of Diplomacy.

Guest Editors: Saori Katada (University of Southern California), Akiko Fukushima (Tokyo Foundation for Policy Research), and Atsushi Yamada (Hitotsubashi University)
